Birds of Northumberland
The Birds of Northumberland County, Ontario
With lists of Butterflies and Dragonflies, and a listing of Vascular Plants
showing preliminary distribution and abundance data
This site contains a wealth of resources about birds and plants in Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. The bird data are particularly extensive. The County is located roughly half way along the north shore of Lake Ontario, and is rich in natural features, ranging from bird colonies to rare tracts of native grassland and savannah. This document and website were prepared by Clive Goodwin and Steven Furino. Clive Goodwin was responsible for collecting and validating bird sightings, and the text, together with the text on the plants. Steven Furino authored the software which managed the data and created the bird charts. Co-authors David Bree provided the section on butterflies and Colin Jones that on dragonflies. The book below is a large document accessed in 4 parts as pdf files. The first page provides additional details.

Our major debt for the documents and website as a whole is to our co-authors, who helped us to greatly expand its interest and utility. Colin Jones generously allowed us to use his tabulation of the County's dragonflies, and David Bree not only wrote the annotated list of butterflies, but supplied most of the illustrations for both sections, and was a reliable source of help and suggestions. Audrey Wilson kindly undertook to provide a valuable account of the long history of Monarch butterfly tagging in the County, and Don Davis provided an update on current tagging work at Presqu'ile. Craig Kerr of the Friends of Presqu'ile assisted willingly and enthusiastically in what finally proved to be an unsuccessful attempt to utilize older copyrighted material originally published by the Friends. Further acknowledgments for the individual sections appear separately.
