Speaker: Sara Pieper

Topic: The cattail invasion: hybrids, and aliens, and natives.

Cattails will be a familiar plant to nearly everyone who has spent any time trudging around swamps or wetlands, or even driving along highways 115 and 7. However, not everyone will be aware that cattails are hybridizing in southern Ontario and around the Great Lakes.

Sara’s research investigates the extent of cattail hybridization across northeastern North America and, also, the reproductive processes (e.g. the movement of pollen) that contributes to the ongoing formation of hybrid cattails.
