This GRCA and Rice Lake Plains Joint Initiative features sites in the Ganaraska Forest to be studied and inventoried by experts; there will also be sites that public Citizen Scientists can explore, survey and assist with species counts. The goal is to obtain a baseline of flora and fauna diversity, as well as insects, reptiles and amphibians, bats, birds and other animals - in short, to gain a better understanding of the Ganaraska Forest's current biodiversity.

We have received the following call for help from Environment Officer, Denice Wilkins:

"The Harbour Turtle Group in Kingston is embarking on a research project on nesting Map Turtles. They need 25 Turtle ICUs (Incubation Care Unit) nest protectors by the beginning of June.

"It is too late for the Centre Hastings Construction Technology Class to build them, as they have done in the past, so I am in need of volunteers to help me put them together. All you need to be able to do is use wire cutters, an electric drill and/or a staple gun (if you have any of these, it would be great if you could bring them along, but it's not required). Construction would take place in the yard at my house, 10 km east of Tweed.

"If you would like to help, let me know what days and times you are available between now and the end of the month. I will figure out what day works for most people and get back to everyone, and will send more details to those who confirm they are able to help.

Please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 613-478-5070 if you have any questions. Looking forward to hearing from you and working together to save turtles!"
