A reminder about a WBFN outing this weekend.

Sunday, July 19, 2015 - Nature Hike to the property of Gabrela Surerus, Alnwick/Haldimand Twp.

Leader: Roger Frost and Eleanor Sartisohn. Habitats include pastureland, cedar swamp, and ponds.

Meet at Cty. Rd. 45 & Hwy. 401 car pool lot at 8:00 a.m. or at the property at 8:30 a.m.

Directions: Take Hwy. 45 north to Cty. Rd. 29. Turn east on Cty. Rd. 29 to Burnley. At the Burnley intersection, go north on Noonan Rd. to the T junction with Taylor Rd. Turn west on Taylor to Lockhart. Turn north on Lockhart to the gravel pit on the east side of the road. The municipal # of this pit is 159.

On auction is a print by Peter Steuart, the Ducks Unlimited 2014 Artist of the Year. The print, titled Northern Landscape, is valued at $300 and is on display at the Cobourg Public Library. Paper ballots are available with the print.

Here are the instructions for taking part in the auction:

  2. The highest bidder will be contacted by phone following the close of the auction.
  3. Arrangements will be made for delivery and payment.
  4. The winning bidder may pay by cash or cheque.

The auction will close at noon on June 30, 2015.

Friday, May 22, 2015 - Outing to the Northumberland Forest Carstairs Universal Trail to view spring flowers and birds. Leader: Russell Lake. Meet at the Hwy 401 and Cty Rd 45 commuter parking lot at 6:30 p.m. or at Carstairs Universal Trail parking lot at 7:00 p.m. The parking lot is on the north side of Bowmanton Rd 0.6 km east of Beagle Club Rd. Option afterwards to drive to Beaver Meadow Rd area to listen for Whip-poor-wills.

Sunday, May 24, 2015 - Outing to Lost Bay Nature Reserve. Leader: Richard Pope. This was one of the reserves highlighted by Caroline Shultz in her presentation at the AGM. This will be an all-day birding outing. Meet at the carpool lot at Hwy 401 and Cty Rd 45 at 6:30 a.m. Bring lunch, water, rain gear and insect repellent. Friday, May 29, 2015, 7 p.m. - President’s Walk - Lone Pine Marsh. For carpooling, meet at car pool lot at Cty Rd 45 and Hwy 401 at 6:30 p.m., or meet at the site at 7:00 p.m. Parking is limited at Lone Pine, so members are encouraged to car pool. Directions: 1: From Cty Rd 25, head east on Cty Rd 21 (Dundonald Rd) for 1.4 km, then turn north on Maple Grove Rd and go for 0.7 km. The parking area is on the right (east side). 2: From Cty Rd 30, turn west on Cty Rd 21 at Hilton. Proceed west for 10.7 km until you reach Maple Grove Rd. Proceed north on Maple Grove Rd for 0.7 km and the parking area is on the right (east side).

Mike currently works for Long Point Bird Observatory, and the Ministry of Natural Resources, and devotes his spare time to Citizen Science projects like eBird, which is a real-time, online checklist program for reporting and accessing information about birds. eBird’s goal is to maximize the utility and accessibility of the vast numbers of bird observations made each year by recreational and professional bird watchers.

Sunday, May 3, 2015 - International Migratory Bird Day

The Rice Lake Plains Joint Initiative is offering activities starting at 8:00 a.m. at the Hazel Bird Nature Reserve, then moving to the Alderville Black Oak Savanna for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. This free event is open to all ages and birding abilities. Please bring your own lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided. All activities will take place rain or shine.
