2019 Memorial Wallace Birdathon

The Wallace Birdathon has been a major fundraiser for the Northumberland Land Trust since 2011, and for Willow Beach Field Naturalists for many years before that. With Norma Wallace’s passing in February, the event will become the Memorial Wallace Birdathon.

Once again we hope that many members and supporters of WBFN will sponsor one of our six expert birders in our efforts to raise funds to be used for stewardship of the six Land Trust nature reserves. The birders who generously volunteer their time are: Kurt Appleman (LLOEC),Roger Frost (Leckey Nature Reserve), David Geale (Chub Point NR), Paulette Hebert (Pelton NR), Doug McRae (Jack van Nostrand NR), and Ben Walters (McEwen NR).

Last year, almost 60 sponsors contributed just over $3,000, and we would love to duplicate that feat this year. This fundraiser helps the Land Trust to proceed confidently with our stewardship programs, including control of dog-strangling vine and other exotic invasives, prescribed burns, trail maintenance, and planting native trees and wildflowers.

There’s a prize! For the sponsor who guesses closest to the total number of bird species seen during the birdathon, we have 2 L of Northumberland County maple syrup from Johnston’s Farm Market just south of Bailieboro. (If two or more guesses are equally close, each will receive 1 L.) And there’s a great birding opportunity! For a sponsorship of $75 or more, one of our guest birders will take you along on his/her day (or part of it) scouring a nature reserve for every bird that can be found.

You can most easily make your sponsorship by contacting John Geale at 905-342-3851 or johngeale@yahoo.com. You will receive a tax receipt for the full amount of any donation of $20 or more, and a report letting you know about all the day’s sightings. In advance, many thanks!
